Meet This Week’s Coffee w/ Artist – Richard Kamimura.
Who is Richard Kamimura? I graduated with a B.A. in Animation Illustration from California State University Fullerton, and currently pursuing a M.F.A in Illustration. I was in advertisement and marketing for 3M, Clorox, Orville, and Knott’s Berry Farm, where I worked on character design, prop design, and idealization design.
What type of art do you specialize in? I specialize in photo manipulation, digital painting, and solid color composition based on portraits and photography, as seen in my work: Blue Obsidian Real Designs by Real People.

How long have you been an artist? I’ve been interested in art since childhood, when I started reading comics and illustration books. I became more serious about art, specifically in illustration, during high school. During that time, I did a lot of life drawings, copying comic book characters, and I took art classes to further develop my illustration techniques.
What/who inspired you to be an artist? I’ve been a huge comic book fan and was inspired by a few comic book illustrators. One of my favorite comic book illustrators is Marc Silvestri. His illustration work of gestural composition and character design are outstanding. I was also inspired by Drew Struzan’s Indiana Jones and Star Wars movie posters.
Tell us about your kickstarter campaign. I’m building a line of art that represents real people through the lens of an illustrative designer. These pieces were composed to celebrate the beauty of women, through art and design. My intention in creating each piece was to capture an intimate moment in time. The line incorporates traditional illustration concepts while utilizing photo manipulation.
