Meet This Week’s Coffee w/ Artist – Richard Kamimura.

Who is Richard Kamimura?  I graduated with a B.A. in Animation Illustration from California State University Fullerton, and currently pursuing a M.F.A in Illustration. I was in advertisement and marketing for 3M, Clorox, Orville, and Knott’s Berry Farm, where I worked on character design, prop design, and idealization design.

What type of art do you specialize in? I specialize in photo manipulation, digital painting, and solid color composition based on portraits and photography, as seen in my work:  Blue Obsidian Real Designs by Real People.

Blue Obsidian Art Designs

How long have you been an artist?  I’ve been interested in art since childhood, when I started reading comics and illustration books. I became more serious about art, specifically in illustration, during high school. During that time, I did a lot of life drawings, copying comic book characters, and I took art classes to further develop my illustration techniques.

What/who inspired you to be an artist?  I’ve been a huge comic book fan and was inspired by a few comic book illustrators. One of my favorite comic book illustrators is Marc Silvestri.  His illustration work of gestural composition and character design are outstanding. I was also inspired by Drew Struzan’s Indiana Jones and Star Wars movie posters.

Tell us about your kickstarter campaign.  I’m building a line of art that represents real people through the lens of an illustrative designer. These pieces were composed to celebrate the beauty of women, through art and design. My intention in creating each piece was to capture an intimate moment in time. The line incorporates traditional illustration concepts while utilizing photo manipulation.

Coffee with Artist: Burcu Arat Sup

Who is Burcu Arat Sup?  I’ve been a commercial illustrator and graphic designer for over 20 years.  I have a Bachelor degree in Fine Arts and Teaching. During my 20’s, I lived in London for a period of time and was inspired by contemporary arts. My main focus was graphic design,  and I worked for 10 years for a variety of agencies until I started my own business.

What type of art do you specialize in?  I design mainly elegant boutique patterns, borders and seamless backgrounds for stationery, wedding invitations and the textile market. I also have  a separate business where I create glamorous characters for birthdays, showers and bridal stationery.

How long have you been an artist?  I’ve been an artist since I was a little girl when I started knitting, creating dresses, and paper accessories for my dolls. I was sketching every single dress before production.

What/who inspired you to be an artist?  My first inspiration were the Conan the Barbarian comic books. I adored the anatomy of women and men drawn and inked in those books. I started copying movements and poses of characters in comic books and then my style took off to a new and stylized version.

What inspires your art?  I am originally from Turkey and my early designs were inspired by Ottoman architecture, textile, seamless prints and floral patterns.  Lately, I’m inspired by color and contemporary arts.  Since I’m a commercial illustrator, I learned to follow everyday fashion, colors, patterns. My style is very chameleon since it changes every year according to new trends.
